  • “A table for two, please.”
  • “We have a reservation under Patel.”
  • “Do you have anything available outside?”
  • “How long is the wait?”
  • “Could we sit somewhere a little quieter?”

Si el anfitrión dice “It’ll be about twenty minutes,”, está dando una estimación, no haciendo una garantía.

Preguntar sobre el menú

  • “What do you recommend?”
  • “What is today’s special?”
  • “What does this come with?”
  • “Is this dish spicy?”
  • “How is the fish cooked?”
  • “Is this enough to share?”

“What does it come with?” pregunta sobre guarniciones, salsas o acompañamientos. “What’s in it?” pregunta sobre ingredientes.

Pedir de manera natural

Todos estos suenan normales:

  • “I’ll have the grilled chicken, please.”
  • “Could I get the vegetable curry?”
  • “I’d like the soup to start, then the salmon.”
  • “We’ll share the salad.”

En restaurantes norteamericanos, “Can I get…?” es muy común. En otros lugares, “Could I have…?” puede sonar un poco más pulido. Ninguno necesita un extra “please give me.”

Un diálogo restaurante completo

Servidor: Are you ready to order, or do you need another minute?

Invitado: We need another minute, please. Is the green curry very spicy?

Servidor: It has a bit of heat, but we can make it mild.

Invitado: Great. I’ll have that, mild, with steamed rice.

Servidor: And for you?

Invitado 2: Could I get the grilled fish? What does it come with?

Servidor: Roast potatoes and a side salad.

Invitado 2: Perfect. Could I have the dressing on the side?

Cambios y necesidades dietéticas

  • “Could I have that without onions?”
  • “Could you put the sauce on the side?”
  • “Is it possible to swap the chips for a salad?”
  • “I don’t eat pork. Which dishes would be suitable?”
  • “I have a severe peanut allergy. Is this prepared near peanuts or peanut oil?”

Para una alergia, no te basas en la vaga frase “I can’t eat…”. Di “I have an allergy” y especifica si es grave. Pide al restaurante que verifique. Si la comunicación es incierta, elige la opción más segura.

Cuando algo está mal

Dale al servidor la oportunidad de arreglarlo:

  • “Sorry, I ordered the vegetarian pasta.”
  • “This steak is more well-done than I requested.”
  • “I think this may be someone else’s order.”
  • “We’re still waiting for one dish.”
  • “Could you warm this up, please?”

Mantén el tono neutral. “I think…” y “It looks like…” son útiles cuando quieres señalarar un error sin sonar acusatorio.

Pedir la cuenta

En inglés británico, pide the bill. En inglés americano, the check es común.

  • “Could we have the bill, please?”
  • “Can we pay separately?”
  • “Could you split the bill between these two cards?”
  • “Is service included?”
  • “Can I pay by card?”
  • “Could I get a receipt?”
